SBA is seeking new Trustees!

The SBA is looking for two new trustees for appointment at the AGM in June 2017. The post is a voluntary one (expenses only).

We are looking for trustees with expertise and interest in one or more of the following areas, so that the Board has a broader understanding of the challenges facing different groups within the profession in this period of considerable change.

  • Personal injury
  • Legal Aid

In addition, the Board is looking to enhance its expertise and understanding of mental health problems, stress and anxiety, as they form an increasing part of the issues facing beneficiaries. Applicants who can bring relevant experience who wish to join the Beneficiary Assistance Committee, working directly to understand beneficiaries and their needs will be welcome.

More information on the role and responsibility of a Trustee can be found in this role description. It is not necessary to be a Solicitor, but there is a limit on the number of non-solicitors who can sit on the Board.

TENURE: Trustees serve for an initial period of two calendar years, with opportunities for reappointment.  The maximum term of appointment is generally ten years, unless a further appointment is in the best interests of the charity.

COMMITMENT: The role requires attendance at four Board meetings a year, plus one awayday usually held on a Saturday.  In addition, there may be out of committee work to deal with between meetings, particularly if the new trustee joins a committee or working party. Membership of the Beneficiary Advisory Committee requires attendance at a monthly meeting usually held at the SBA offices in Wandsworth, London SW12.

APPLICATION PROCESS: In order to help applicants understand the work of the charity, we invite them to visit the office (in early 2017) for a discussion with the Chief Executive. There will subsequently be an interview with two trustees. We will also invite chosen candidates to observe a meeting of the Board (15th March 2017).
